Junior School

At Northfield we aim to encourage pupils to see art as a means of self expression and to develop an awareness of the world around them. Our pupils experience different mediums and techniques used by a wide variety of artists, designers, craft makers and sculptors from across the globe and throughout history.  We use sketch books to collect and develop ideas and encourage pupils to reflect upon and evaluate their own and others' work.

We are an Artsmark School and currently working towards renewing our award.  The focus of this award is to use the Arts across the curriculum, providing engaging and inspiring experiences that support pupils' attainment in Reading, Writing and Maths. We are also building long term partnerships with arts and cultural providers with a focus on sharing skills and knowledge.

Staff run a weekly art club which is free to attend for pupils. The pupils at the art club choose and plan activities for each term. Last term we focussed on clay skills and made a range of ornaments and pots.

Art National Curriculum
Pupils are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils are taught:

  • to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  • about great artists, architects and designers in history
