  • Y3 Art Gallery

    Sat 04 Mar 2023

On Friday 3rd March, Y3 held an art gallery for the rest of the school and parents to visit. This was part of our new Scheme of Work from Access Art.

To create their landscape pieces Y3 looked at the artists Alice Kettle and Hannah Rae for inspiration around work which involved cloth, thread and paint. They then used their work in Geography to inspire them to create a UK landscape using paint and thread on their cloth. The finished pieces look amazing and everyone who visited the gallery was amazed.

We will show off our artwork by displaying it in school, before the children take it home.

  • World Book Day 2023

    Sat 04 Mar 2023

At Northfield we love to read! On Thursday 2nd March we took part in World Book Day. There was lots of speculation over what the teachers would dress up as and excitement from the children over their costumes.

When the day finally arrived the children were surprised yet excited to find that all of the staff had dressed as Mr Men and Little Miss characters, amongst them we had some old favourites such as Mr Bump and Mr Tickle, as well as some newer characters such as Little Miss Cold and Little Miss Bookworm.

There were some excellent character costumes from the children a well- we had characters from authors such as Roald Dahl, David Walliams and Dr Suess, as well as a whole host of others, and even some Mr Men too!

The day was Mr Men themed and all children designed their own Mr Man or Little Miss character and made a Mr Men or Little Miss Book. These were really fun to make and are going to go on display in our school library.

  • Creswell Crags 2023

    Sat 18 Feb 2023

Year 3 were very excited to go on their first trip at Northfield to Creswell Crags. It was a really foggy morning when we set off on the bus but the fog soon cleared and we had lovely weather.

When we arrived we were split into three tribes for the day, the reindeer, the wolves and the hyenas. We all went off to do our fun activities.

The activities we did were visiting Mother Grundy's Parlour, a small cave in the gorge. We looked at different Stone Age artefacts and made some music in the cave as well. He had to wear hard hats in cases we bumped our heads. Connor, our cave guide was really fun and told us lots of facts.

Another activity we did was visit the museum to see what one looks like and we looked at some rock samples and sorted them into sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. This was good preparation for our topic on rocks next term.

The final activity we did was Survival Skills- we learnt how hard it would have been to be a Stone Age person. We tried to build shelters from sticks and animal skins, we tried to light a fire and we even hunted a bison!

All in all it was a fantastic day, all of the children really enjoyed it and were excellent ambassadors for Northfield.

  • Christmas Performances

    Thu 15 Dec 2022

It has been a fantastic week this week at Northfield as we get closer to Christmas. Our Christmas shows have been fantastic, the children have all sung their hearts out and learnt their lines. We had some fabulous costumes and super scenery too.

Y3/4 started us off with 'Rock Around the Flock' which was all about the shepherds' point of view. There was an excellent audience at all performances and the children worked really hard to make it a magical show. We had speaking parts, songs and some intrumentals on bells and the kazoo!

Take a look at the photos here.

This was followed by Y5/6 performance of 'Christmas Points of View'. This is a medley of different sketches which build up a picture of Christmas. There was some excellent acting, dancing and singing. The turkeys were a particular favourite!

  • Bronze Young Ambassador Conference 2022

    Tue 29 Nov 2022

A group of Y5 children had a great day at Sheffield EIS learning how to become a young ambassador for health and sports in school. Here’s a brief description of what they got up to…

Travel Ambassadors: We designed a t-shirt, listened to a song about crossing the road safely and learned about activities we could do in school.

Health Ambassadors: We learned how to promote health and wellbeing in school. One of our activities was a relay race that involved putting tennis balls on a line of cones.

Media Ambassadors: We took photos of others doing their activities. Then, we used the photos in iMovie and made a mini video.

Sports Ambassadors: We did archery, speed stacking and some teamwork exercises. We learned activities we could use in our own events in school.

In the afternoon, the children participated in some fun and exciting activities like body zorbing and ice skating.

Here are a few quotes from some of our BYAs:

George – I learned how to be a sports ambassador. I loved the body zorbing because it was fun.

Summer – It was fun! My favourite part was the ice skating because I got to push and glide like I have done before but I think got better at it.

Ruby – I liked the games we played and learning what to do. My favourite part was the ice skating.

  • Y4 Magna 2022

    Fri 04 Nov 2022

To begin our new Physics topic ‘Electricity, the Tigers class enjoyed a fabulous day out at Magna. In 6 small groups, we competed to see who could dry a fairy dress the most. Each group had to make a variety of simple and parallel circuits whilst adding a range of apparatus like dimmer switches, buzzers, bulbs and a fan. We had a great time investigating which materials were either insulators or conductors. Skey said "The workshop was really interesting. I didn't realise that water could conduct electricity!" Jack B said "The workshop was my favourite as I liked making the circuits."

After this, we investigated the four pavilions Earth, Water, Fire and Air. There was lots of interactive learning and many opportunities to get hands on with the equipment. Benjamin thought Magna was really good and the fire tornado was magical.

We had lots of information to find to complete our quiz sheets but Eddie and Alex did an amazing job to find the most details.

The Big Melt was very exciting and there was lots of sparks, flames and fire to see along with the history of how steel is made. Charlotte enjoyed this as it helped her to learn about the past. Ernie really enjoyed the fire and Alex said "The Melt made me feel really scared but excited at the same time."

  • Harvest 2022

    Sat 22 Oct 2022

The wet weather couldn't dampen our spirits for Harvest this year! Despite the mizzle, we went ahead with our Harvest celebrations and it was great to finally feel like we were back to normal!

We started the day off with our infamous breakfast with sausage and bacon cobs. A big thank you to Stephen and his team from Moss Valley Fine Meats, who provided the meat and came and cooked for us! We served over 150 breakfasts before 9am and it was lovely to see the whole school community, including some past pupils, join us to share food and conversation.

After breakfast the whole school ventured outside for outdoor learning. Miss Jones would like to say a huge thank you to all of the parents and pupils who came to help in the grounds and allotment to prepare for winter- such a lot was achieved in a short space of time with some fun and laughter as well. We collected raspberries, carrots, green beans, apples and lettuce from the allotment before digging over the beds for winter.

The finale was a Harvest assembly, in which all classes presented something that they had prepared about Harvest. Year 3 talked about Harvest around the world, Year 4 performed a poem, Year 5 shared facts about Harvest and Year 6 performed a song. Rev. Elliot George, from St Phillip's Church also popped in to join us for Harvest and introduce himself as he is new to the area.

There are some lovely photos in our Gallery for you to take a look at here.

The Moss Valley are also taking orders of their meat for Christmas, which can be found here.

  • Rockstars Day 2022

    Sat 22 Oct 2022

This year we added more into our annual Rockstars Day. As usual, we dressed up in Rockstar costumes and did our soundcheck on TTR. There were some fabulous costumes from all of the children. We had lots of versions of David Bowie walking around our school this year and at least two Olivia Newton-Johns! There were group costumes from some of the teachers and pupils as well!

In addition to our usual activities, each class focused on a rock band. Lions listened to Bon Jovi, Leopards to Foo Fighters, Tigers had Def Leppard, Eagles listened to Cher, Hawks to Rolling Stone and Year 6 studied Queen.  We listened to and appraised their music, contrasting their hits throughout the years. Then we looked at album artwork and designed our own covers. Each class had three winners, one for best costume, one for best album cover and one for most improved on TTR. It was a fun filled day for everyone!

  • Y6 Rivers Trip

    Thu 13 Oct 2022

On 11th October, Year 6 loved exploring rivers as part of their Geography topic 'Rivers Deep, Mountains High'. They worked brilliantly as a team to explore the depth, speed and key features of some of our local rivers in the Peak District. They also investigated the water cycle and discussed different environmental matters.

"On the Rivers Trip we measured the river, timed how fast the river went and learnt about the water cycle. I enjoyed timing how fast the river went." Alice

"My favourite thing was doing the experiments. We timed how fast the current was, how deep and wide it was and what the temperature was. We thought about what the bottom of the river was like." Betsy

"On the Rivers Trip we measured the length and the width of the river and found out how fast the river was. The thing I enjoyed the most was putting dog biscuits in the river and timing how quick they were in 5 metres. I learnt more about rivers and how they were created." Ella

  • Investigating Towers Trip

    Wed 05 Oct 2022

On Monday 3rd October, Eagles class took the train to Chesterfield to visit the Crooked Spire Church and learn about how the tower works. They learned about pulley systems and how they are used within the tower for bell ringing.  Eagles class also found out about the history of the church, its tower and the spire. In the afternoon, they worked in teams to create their own sturdy tower and pulley system drawing on the knowledge they’d learned throughout the day. This involved using Lego bricks, rope and other Lego parts to successfully pull a Lego brick up into their tower. There was lots of great communication and team work.

Here's what some of our pupils thought:

George – I liked going on the train to Chesterfield because it was fun.

Eva and Lily – The outside of the tower was scary but fun. It was the most memorable moment for us.

Lillie – I liked building the Lego structure and following the criteria to make it sturdy and strong.
