  • Children In Need

    Fri 15 Nov 2024

Our Children In Need fund raising event saw many CIN t-shirts, pyjamas, spotty clothing and a fabulous array of home-made t-shirts including one the children made for Mr Walmsley on Thursday night.

We are pleased to say we have raised an amazing £235.00 for Children In Need. Thank you to each and every one of your who donated and for your time and effort in making our children look fantastic!

  • TTR Day

    Fri 01 Nov 2024

WOW! What a superb event TT Rockstars Day was. Not only were most of the children dressed up in costume but the maths and music learning that took place on the day was absolutely superb. We must take this opportunity to thank you – the parents – for spending time and money on making your children look absolutely amazing!

TT Rockstars Day also kick started the school TT Rockstars tournament. This is an inter-school competition that rewards classes. At the time of writing this (Tuesday 29th October at 2:30pm), the Kestrels are currently in the lead but the Hawks are just 16 points behind!

Whilst that tournament has a deadline, there is also the whole school leaderboard which runs throughout the year. I can confirm that Marcel is top of the school with a studio speed of 0.68 seconds – this means on average, he answers 88 questions per minute! Following Marcel is Matilda C and Isaac B in second and third place respectively.

Rumour has it that Mrs Johnson is looking to climb the leaderboard (currently 7th position in the school) and Mr Walmsley is looking to get himself into the competition too.

  • Bronze Young Ambassadors

    Fri 18 Oct 2024

On Thursday 17th October, sixteen Year 5 children went to the EIS in Sheffield to learn how to be Bronze Young Ambassadors. Throughout the day, the children participated in a variety of sports and activities as part of their training. Here’s what they said about it:

“We learned determination and resilience when we were playing a team game and kept dropping the ball. Also, when we were doing a cricket activity, we tried really hard to hit the ball and thought about different ways to develop our hand-eye coordination. We liked the stepping stones because we needed to use teamwork and balance.”

The children also met a Team GB, medal- winning Olympian in gymnastics – Sam Oldham. This caused a lot of excitement! They said:

“Sam was very cool and really nice because he encouraged us and included everyone. He gave us advice on how to improve our handstands. He’s an inspiration for the nation and told us to keep working hard. His story of how he got into gymnastics was inspiring.”

  • Harvest Celebrations

    Wed 16 Oct 2024

We had a fabulous time celebrating Harvest on Tuesday 15th October and Mr Walmsley was really excited to see so many of our school community taking part.

We started the day off with our famous hot breakfast of sausage and bacon sandwiches, cooked for us by Stephen and the team at Moss Valley Fine Meats. It was lovely to see so many families, including some older siblings who have now left us, enjoying their breakfast and socialising as a school community.

After breakfast everyone took to the grounds to take part in outdoor activities and celebrate Autumn. Miss Jones would like to say a huge thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and other family members who came along to help us. We spent time preparing the allotment for winter and tidying the school grounds. Other outdoor activities included orienteering, making well-dressing tiles and creating artwork with natural materials. Even the drizzle didn't spoil our fun!

We ended our celebrations with an assembly in which all classes shared something about Harvest.

Once again, this was a fantastic community event and we are so grateful to everyone who came to support the children and our school.

    White Hall 2024

On Monday 23rd September, our Y5 children visited White Hall for their outdoor and adventurous residential. They spent three days participating in activities like indoor rock climbing, zip lining, and rock and stream scrambling. In the evenings, we played outdoor games like secret agents where the teachers hid and the children had to find them. It was a fantastic few days of fun!

Here’s what the children had to say:

“It was good fun, especially the leap of faith where we were like flying animals.” Betsy

“My favourite bit was the rock scrambling and getting to see views that were higher than expected and you could see for miles.” Oliver

“I enjoyed everything but my favourite was secret agents and zip lining” Blake

“I liked the rock scrambling because it was an adventure and the view was really pretty.” Gracie

“I liked the rock scrambling because of the amazing view and it was really high.” Issy

Quote of the trip: “This (rock scrambling) is better than going on my PlayStation.” Henry

Words we think describe our trip: spectacular, amazing, fun, incredible, exciting, challenging and extraordinary.

See the gallery for lots of great photos of our time at White Hall.

  • Weekly News 27.09.24

    Fri 27 Sep 2024

What an unbelievable week we have had. Whilst the Year 5 children were creating memories that will last a life time, the other children continued with their hard work – Mr Walmsley was really pleased to see some fantastic Year 4 work on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Year 5 Residential - White Hall

WOW! What an amazing three days we have all had at White Hall this past week. The children were absolutely fantastic throughout the trip and they were a credit to both the school and their parents – we wish you could have been there to hear all of the wonderful things that the centre said about them. Over the three days, the children took part in rock scrambling, stream scrambling, leap of faith, zip wire, indoor rock climbing and low ropes during the day and played Secret Agents and Haggis Bandits at night. Throughout their time at White Hall, they demonstrated our school values superbly, showing resilience, kindness, teamwork, curiosity, respect and responsibility (your children were actually responsible for cleaning their own tables at meals times, making their beds and keeping their rooms tidy…… ish!). Mr Walmsley would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff for giving up their free time to ensure our children have an experience that they will never forget. He would also like to thank one of our Governors, Mark Johnson, for volunteering to help throughout the duration of the trip – this is going above and beyond his voluntary role as a school Governor.

    Attendance

As you will have seen on the news over the last 3 months, the government are pushing attendance. We are pleased to say that for the last three weeks, we have had the following attendances:

    Week 1 – 99.49%             Week 2 – 98.89%              Week 3 – 98.32%

Based on the most recent DFE data, we are 8th out of the 328 schools in our local authority and nationally we are in the top 10% of all school. Thank you for your support in achieving these outcomes. Let’s continue to work together to ensure our wonderful school continues to be a shining light in terms of attendance.

    Gold Award

Congratulations to this week’s Gold Award Winners can be seen in the picture on the left. Reasons for winning the award ranged from excellent teamwork and resilience at White Hall to superb maths and English work. We are proud of the children’s excellent work ethic.

    Harvest Celebrations

Our Family Harvest Breakfast, Gardening & Assembly will take place on Tuesday 15th October. Please log onto ParentPay to book a slot (8am or 8:30am) and order a sausage or bacon sandwich for all family members attending by Friday 4th October. Please note, children should not attend by themselves and must be accompanied by an adult. After breakfast, parents and grandparents are welcome to join us for a quick pre-Winter tidy up around our grounds and then we finish with our Harvest Assembly. Further details will be made available once food numbers have been confirmed.

    Book Fair

Please join us for our Book Fair sale on Monday 30th September to Wednesday 2nd October, 3.30pm to 4pm in the School Hall next week.  We have a wide selection of books available for your children - they would be perfect for birthday or Christmas presents. On the day, please meet your child on the playground first and then come into school to make your purchases. We will also be open during Reading Morning on Thursday 3rd October 8.45am to 9.15am. Cash or card payments are accepted. For older children wishing to choose their own books, money should be sent in a named purse to spend at lunchtime or afterschool. For every book bought at Book Fair, school will earn books as a reward. We look forward to seeing you there.

    After school clubs

At Northfield Junior School, we pride ourselves on providing the children with a variety of extra-curricular activities. Once a child is signed up, the expectation is that the child attends unless we have heard from the parent. With this is mind, please contact school to let us know if your child is not attending the club – you may leave a voicemail if the phoneline is engaged. Thank you for your support.

    Car Parking

For health and safety reasons, please keep walking through the school car park to a minimum. Whilst we understand that parking around our school can be difficult, please refrain from parking on the corners of the road. We have children who walk home from school on their own and we would like to ensure that they can cross the road as safely as possible.

    Button Badge Winners

This week, we had two values for the children to focus on: teamwork and kindness. The school councillors then chose a member of their class who has displayed these values throughout the week. We would like to congratulate this week’s button badge winners – you are all fantastic for upholding the school values!

    All Day Breakfast

This Thursday, the kitchen will be putting on one of the children’s favourite meals…. the all day breakfast! This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to try a school dinner. If you would like a school dinner on Thursday, please go to ParentPay to order your child’s meal at a cost of £3.25.

  • Weekly News 20.09.24

    Fri 20 Sep 2024

The second week seems to have flown by in the blink of an eye. Believe it or not, Whitehall is coming up on Monday. By the time this is written next week, the first residential of the year will be a memory that the children cherish for the rest of their lives.

    Gold Award Winners

Congratulations to this week’s Gold Award Winners. We are all proud of the effort they are putting into their school life and the work they are producing.

Just a quick reminder that the children should only be wearing small studded earrings – this is for health and safety reasons. Please ensure they are removed on P.E days or tape is provided to cover them up.

The book fair will take place from Monday 30th September to Wednesday 2nd October. More details will follow next week.

    Summer Reading Challenge

Congratulations once again to all of the children that took part in the Summer reading challenge. As we reported 2 weeks ago, we were 1st place in Derbyshire which means that our school has been shortlisted as a finalist for our region in the 2024 National Read Aloud Challenge. The winning and runner-up schools will be announced on Tuesday 15th October. The children in the picture made it onto the regional leaderboard and have been rewarded with a book.

    Designated Safeguarding Leaders

We would like to welcome Miss Burton to the school’s safeguarding team. Miss Burton carried out the first part of the training on Tuesday and will complete the course on Thursday. This means that the safeguarding team consists of Miss Jones, Miss Burton, Mrs Housley and Mr Walmsley. If you ever have any issues or concerns regarding safeguarding, please speak to any member of the school staff however it will be one of the four outlined above that will deal with any safeguarding issues.

The children should also be drinking water during breaktimes and in lessons as and when required. Juice is allowed in their lunchbox.

     Button Badge Winners

Every week in school, we have a ‘value of the week’ and this week’s value was teamwork. The school councillors will then choose a member of their class who has displayed this value throughout the week. This week, upper school have set the example for the lower school. Congratulations to this week’s winners.

    Mr Walmsley’s Reading Challenge

This week, Mr Walmsley announced his reading challenge. During the reading for pleasure assembly, the children read ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl and their challenge was to create an evil plot similar to the worms in the spaghetti or the frog in the bed. The deadline for the challenge is Friday 26th September. Once your child has completed it, they will put in the reading challenge box which is in the hall on the piano.

  • Sports Day 2024

    Thu 04 Jul 2024

On Thursday 28th June, the whole school enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon of sports!

The house teams competed for the prestigious Sports Day trophy and they represented their house teams brilliantly. It was a great day and lovely to see so many parents joining us to watch the children complete their events.

We saw different Spirit of the Games values throughout the afternoon: teamwork, passion, determination and self-belief to get through the finish line first. We heard the children ‘encouraging each other to do well’ – our school motto! We also celebrated all the amazing sporting achievements that have happened throughout the year.

Well done to this year’s winners…The Sapphires!

Here’s what some of our children thought:

“It was fabulous! My favourite part was the sprint because I came second,” said Maisie.

Issy said, “It was fun. I liked the bean bag race.”

“It’s fun to have sports events as a whole school,” Seb thinks.

Saatvik thinks, “It was a really successful Sports Day. I love the sprinting to see how fast I can go.”

Lila said, “I liked everyone cheering and hearing the music."

Our Northfield parents also commented on the atmosphere and how fun they thought the afternoon was.

  • Y3/4 Ancient Egyptian Day

    Wed 12 Jun 2024

As part of our topic on Ancient Egypt, we had a fun, immersive day really getting stuck into life in Ancient Egypt and having fun by dressing up. There were some fabulous costumes and accessories all across Year 3 and 4 and we could see all of the fantastic effort that had gone into putting these together, along with all of the carefully applied eye-liner!

Throughout the day each class took part in different activities. We learnt about Ancient Egyptian jewellery and made a colourful collar to wear.

Next we learnt all about Ancient Egyptian cartouches. We studied the hieroglyphs that the Ancient Egyptians would have used, wrote our name in hieroglyphs and then used clay to make our own cartouche. We used the slip and score method to add our own decorative edging.

Later in the day we also learnt about Ancient Egyptian medicine and predicted which of the remedies matched each illness. We were disgusted to find out that some of them involved dead mice in your mouth, rubbing pharaohs brains in your eyes and using ostrich dung- yuck!

We rounded the day off by learning about the sphinx and tried to make a 3D model of one, which turned out to be trickier than we thought. Everyone had a great day.

Check out the photos in our gallery.

  • N Factor

    Thu 28 Mar 2024

Thank you to all supporting our children in The N factor. The school council had a fantastic time organising it and really enjoyed the responsibility of preparing and delivering our talent show!

It has been great to see so many children getting involved and there has been a lot of excitement in school throughout the last few weeks. All of our children enjoyed taking part in our auditions whether they auditioned themselves or helping to judge who would go through to The N Factor final.

A huge well done to all of our finalists and everyone who took part. Special congratulations to Saatvik for coming first place with his fantastic skills on the piano.

Here’s what some of our children thought:

“I thought it was very nice to see lots of different acts. It was amazing!” – Amie

“I liked judging the N factor because it was fun and exciting!” – Luke

“I really liked the crazy kidz because I liked hearing Beatrix on the drums,” – Ivie

“I was really impressed with Saatvik because he only started playing the piano recently,” William
